I made it safely to Scotland and back. It really was an adventure, and
I kept a hand-written record each day. As I get it transcribed and coded,
it will be available on my Scottish page under
Adventures. Upon returning to Strasbourg, I
discovered that the recent storms have caused some damage. A few houses
lost shingles from their roofs, a few trees got blown down, and a few
road signs got twisted out of shape. But otherwise all seems fine.

Well, the first week of Module 3 is now over. A very short week to be
sure, but also a busy one. Three solid days of lectures on remote sensing
and image interpretation. Which is not to say it was not fun- "images"
translates to "cool pictures." And on Wednesday, myself and another were
being "ethnic" which drove some of our classmates crazy. Granted, it was
Jessica's dreidel that made noise when it was spun that was bugging people, but
some didn't even know what it was!

This weekend I spent a lot of time working on the
Geneology & Scottish sections. I added a descendency chart for
my great-grandfather Lyon,
and a page of some clan tartans. Granted, neither of these are complete
yet, but I am in need of more information. I have also gotten more of
my adventures in Scotland transcribed. Sunday dinner I was invited, along
with the missionaries, to eat with one of the English families in the
ward. It was a "girl's night out" because the father and brother of the
family were both out of town.

This week, the MSS class was split into two groups. It was nice not
having all 40 of us in one room for the whole day. But I feel like I
have missed out on some opprotunities becuase the two groups were
studying two different topics & I could only do one. About half of the
class, including myself, has been fighting the flu. Finally, on Friday
we got our grades on the second module exams. I passed everything,
thankfully.

There were two different group presentations this week. For the second
one we were in the same groups as for the scavanger hunt at the beginning
of the year. Once again, group 4 won. Yeah! We Rule! Didn't get anything for it
this time, though. It was a business plan presentation on providing maps
to insurance companies using satellite data so that they could figure
out what kinds of rates they should set along the Rhine for flood
insurance. We did it in 5 hours, all at once, and it was quite fun.

This last weekend was kind of weird. Half the class had to go to Paris
on Friday for visa interviews for placement, but i stayed in Strasbourg.
With nothing to do. So I slept most of the day, then was supposed to
meet with the sister missionaries at four. There was a strike, though,
and the trams were screwed up, so they were late & I missed them 'cause
I had to go grocery shopping. In the evening there was supposed to be a
concert at the church, but it was cancelled. I didn't find this out until
after I got there, but at least I was able to practice the hymns for
Relief Society. And I got to meet the new sister- there are now 3 here.
Saturday I was in the IS library, & when I checked my e-mail, I found
out about an on-line Con, so I stayed up for it. I won a book! On Sunday,
RS & priesthood were combined, so we edned up only singing one song-
the one I had learned just this week!

I discoverd that tuna fish and lemonade do NOT go together! This week
we spent a lot of time working on the team project. We had to both get
the literature survey ready for the symposium that will be after placement,
and choose the specific topic we want to work on during module five.
Actually, we've only managed to narrow it down to 3 so far, from 9. Not
bad, I guess. But for some reason, all those who have come up with ideas
seam to think our product needs to be a business plan. I can see wanting
to do something besides just another report, but we're a bunch of students,
not a business, so why would we want to write up a business plan. I'm
confused. I also finally got my pictures from my
trip to Scotland
developed, though only a handful are up yet. Check back to see more.

This was the last week of classes. Which makes for a very strange
feeling, as there's still five+ months left. But I finally was able to
go on splits with the sister missionaries. One of the first things they
had said to me when I first arrived in Strasbourg was that we should do
splits sometime, & it has taken this long to do so. But now I have to
go study for finals.

The first week of Session 5 began with the Groundbreaking of the new ISU campus on Monday. It
was cold & cloudy, and the heavy machinary had already been working for several days. After the
groundbreaking, there were a bunch of speeches inside, and a reception. On Tuesday we had a
careers workshop, and Wednesday through Friday consisted of the ISU Symposium. The topic was
"Space Transportation for the 21st Century: Evolution or Revolution?" The first day
was pretty good, but on Thursday I had a really bad allergy attack and ended up missing most of
it, first because I was miserable, then because I left to get some allergy medice, and then
because the medicine put me to sleep! Friday morning was on "what is the proper role of government
in space transportation," and I was one of the rapporteurs. So I had to pay very close attention,
especially to the panel discussion afterwards. The discussion was really good: it had a good
chairperson, and was the first one to actually be a discussion. Today myself & Christoph
(the other rapporteur) wrote our report. We were told to keep it short, and it took us less than
an hour to turn our notes into a report.

I gave my placment presentation today. I think it went very well. My advisor and
mentor had asked me several questions beforehand that were fairly hard, and so
I had prepared for them, but nobody asked those questions today. Now it is time
for my class to start working on the Team Project. We had picked a topic - space
tug - before leaving for placement. Now most of the class wants to change it, but
there is still disagreement on whether we should look at the next 15 years or the
whole century. The original topic was "Space Transportation for the 21st
Century," so I am of the opinion that we should look at the whole coming century.
